Denison Coach’s Blog Off Season 5 2018
The Denison Yellowjackets are preparing for the 2018 season as school winds down. Coach Chad Rogers is overseeing a program that is seeing growth in numbers and quality. The annual physicals were done in April for the 2018-19 school year.
How is the off season program going now that we are here at the end of the school year?
“It is going really well; the season will be here before we know it. We are concentrating on defense one week and offense the next. And of course, we are still lifting all week.”
What do you do during the defensive weeks?
“We do it all; we work on individual drills; unit drills and team drills. This is where we really get to teach tackling and technique.”
What about offense?
“We are working on passing and running plays; again, we do individual, unit and team drills. We get to teach blocking and technique. It is intensive.”
This is your seventh season in Denison and you’ve elected to forego spring practice again. How will the rest of the year go leading to fall practice Aug. 7?
“We are in Phase 3 of off season and it will go until the end of school. We will begin our strength and conditioning camp in June (16 workouts) and give them about three weeks off leading to fall practice.”
Why are you skipping spring practice this year?
“We need that extra week of practice in the fall. We play Sherman Aug. 31 and want to be ready. We get an extra scrimmage also, so we can get some good looks at our team.”
What else are you doing in the football program?
“We have the 7-on- 7 season starting in mid May; we have a state qualifying tournament first. This will determine if we can compete for the state 7 – on – 7 championship. We have to finish first or second in this tournament. We have made the state tournament twice in my seven years here. We also will be playing in a 7 – on – 7 league in June in Celina.”
How many do you have in the football program now?
“We are going to welcome 70 freshmen in the fall; add those to our upperclassmen and we have about 175 athletes in football. We are increasing our numbers every year.”
How do you feel about the direction the football program is going since you’ve been in Denison?
“I like where we’re at; all the growth and success we can build on in the years to come. We are growing all the time; we just got two new players joining the team today.”
I have to ask: How about that “Battle of the Axe” game coming Aug. 31 as the first game of the season?
“We’ll be ready!”
