Denison Coach’s Blog Off Season 6 2017
The Denison Yellowjackets are working as a team in the strength and conditioning summer program in preparation for the upcoming season. Two-a-days start Aug. 7!
How are things going now at this point of the summer (Late June)?
“We have great participation in the strength and conditioning program; we just got started and will go the rest of the summer. Our junior high program begins after the Fourth (of July). In the high school program, we have 85 kids; impressive.”
What about the 7 on 7 tournament from June?
“We played hard; we competed well, but we didn’t make it. We just couldn’t put it together in the semis.”
What else did you do?
“We did the annual lineman challenge; they were impressive.”
At this point in the summer, how are you feeling about the upcoming season?
“I’m excited to get it going; we have high expectations for our team. We need to keep what we have going this summer and move it to fall practice. I love that first day of practice; the snap of the ball.”
You are beginning your sixth season at the helm of the Yellowjackets; how does it feel?
“We have a great group of guys; they have been together; they’ve grown and matured together over the past six years. I can’t wait.”
How many do you have returning on offense and defense?
“We have 30+ lettermen returning in the fall with five starters on offense and seven on defense.”
What about some of the position players? How is quarterback Austin Emery looking?
“I expect him to have an outstanding year; he is looking good. He is throwing the ball well and doing what we ask him.”
What about back –ups for Austin?
“We’re not going through what we did last season (when Emery got hurt and there was no back up with experience). We have four getting ready for us; Cade Gordy, senior; Pierce Barker, junior; Kenny Gaffney, junior and Zalon Whimbish, a sophomore.”
What about running back?
“Kenny Gaffney has some big shoes to fill with the loss (to graduation) of our 2,000 yard rusher Tre Lyday, but we expect him to do well. We have a couple of other kids who we expect to be good, too.”
What about the defense?
“Our defense looks good; we have our two d-tackles back: Jordan Hunter and Braylon Ramsey. Our linebackers look good; and Ty McFail at safety is doing well.”
The kicking game?
“We have Austin (Emery) punting and kicking for us still; but Jayden Pihecho is another we can use; and we have some others vying for a spot.”
What are your goals for this season?
“Of course, we want to win district. Denton Ryan will be good as they always are. We just want to get in there and win that first game; then win our first district game and win the last game (against rival Sherman) and see what we can do inbetween.”
How do the scrimmages and early games line up?
“We go to Paris North Lamar on a Friday early and then Paris High School comes to Munson the next Thursday. We will know a lot by then. We’ve got a good Trinity Christian Academy team coming here that first game; and then we travel to Frisco. Finally, Abilene Wylie travels to Munson and we finish with Frisco Heritage. They have one of the best quarterbacks in the country. It will be a challenge.”
What are your thoughts right now about the season?
“Only five weeks until we start!”
