Denison Coach's Blog 11 2016

By: Coach Chad Rogers
Denison Coach’s Blog 11 2016 The Denison Yellowjackets lost to first place and state ranked Denton Ryan last week, 42-14, but are getting ready for the Battle of the Axe! How did your team do overall against Ryan? “We played well overall; we hustled. I’m proud of them.” What about the offense? “It could have been better; we played one of the better defenses I’ve ever coached against. It was our lowest point output of the season.” And the defense? “Our run defense played well. But they (Ryan) have so many athletes. We did all we could; all that we were asked to do.” What about QB David Sauceda? “He played well; I’m proud of all our guys; their effort and composure. They kept their emotions in check and just played football.” What about special teams? “We did all right; we had a couple of good returns.” How has this week gone with the Battle of the Axe coming up Friday? “It’s been good; really good. You know, we played Thursday last week, so that extra day of practice has been great. We have put the Ryan game behind us and are moving forward.” How do you match up with the Bearcats? “We match up well. Their coaching staff does a great job. They have a good defense; a good quarterback and a good running back and receiver. It should be an exciting game.” What will you have to do to win? “We have to block and tackle; we have to get on our blocks and stay on them. We have to put pressure on the QB.” What about that BOTA rivalry atmosphere? “It’s got a playoff type feel to it. It’s an exciting time of the season. If you can’t get excited about this game, then you can’t get excited.” This will be your fifth BOTA game; does it feel any different? “It has settled down for me the past couple of years. Of course, there is more on the line this year; there are playoff implications.” And what are those? “If we win, we are the number one seed from our district in the small school division. If Sherman wins by six points, they are second seed; they have to beat us by 13 points to get the number one seed. WF Rider is the other team in the mix for the two spots.” Who would you play in the playoffs if you qualify? “We just learned that it will be Fort Worth Boswell for the first seed; and Aledo for the second place seed.” What do you like about the BOTA game? “I like it; there is so much community involvement. It’s a great game to be part of. I love Munson Stadium; it’s a great place to play.”
