Denison Coach's Blog 7 2018

Denison Coach’s Blog 7   2018

The Denison Yellowjackets are coming off the bye-week and beginning the stretch run to the playoffs with four district games left. It all starts with Frisco High School at Munson.

You had the bye-week and have been off for a couple of weeks. How is the team?

“It has been a good couple weeks of practice; even with that loss before. We are having great practices; I can’t say enough good about our guys.”

That loss was against Lake Dallas, which put Denison at 2-2 in district play. How do you think the game went for the team?

“Not very well overall; but we did have some spots. The kids fought hard. We tied the game after being down by 21 points; we even went ahead, but couldn’t hold it.”

How did the offense do?

“At times, we did what we wanted to do. We just have to trust each other more.”

You are doing something different with your quarterback, Cade Gordy, this week, right?

“Yes, he will be a two way player for us. He played two years for us at safety before moving to QB, so this is nothing new for him. We need some more depth at defensive back; and I think it will help him play quarterback better.”

How about your running game against Lake Dallas?

“We were good at times; we just need to be more consistent. We like to go fast; and we just need to get in that rhythm.”

How did the defense play?

“We played well at times; we just need to be more consistent in that facet, too.”

You play Frisco High School Friday; what kind of team do they have this season?

“This is our Pink Out Game; everyone is excited; we are recognizing Lori Akins, who is a breast cancer survivor. She will help flip the coin. We need to be ready for Frisco. They run the Wing T a lot. They have a good team.”

What will you have to do to win?

“They will run right at you with the action pass; you have to get on them and tackle well in the open field. On offense, we have to get on and stay on our blocks.”

This is the time of year when the playoffs enter into the conversation. What do you think of the Jackets’ chances?

“If you want in the playoffs, you need to win now. There are only four games left; we will know a lot more in a couple of weeks. There are some key games left; I like our chances against anyone.”

The “Pink Out” Game for Breast Cancer Awareness Month is 7 p.m. at Munson Stadium Friday in Denison.
