Denison Coach’s Blog 1   Fall 2018
The Denison Yellowjackets have completed two scrimmages and are on their way to the first game of the season: “The Battle of the Axe” on Friday at Munson Stadium. Go Jackets!
First, How is the mood among the players for this upcoming season?
“Everyone is excited. We are ready to move forward and do what we do best.”
How did the Argyle scrimmage go?
“We got a lot of good out of it. You know, they are a quality (Class) 4A team. They are ranked by some as Number One in the state. We worked on the basics and did well. Our physical conditioning was tested; we ran 196 plays, but we played hard.”
What about the skill positions?
“We ran well; everyone got plenty of touches. We are getting better and better in the run game. I am pleased at this aspect. Our receivers played well; we won’t see this much press defense in our district, so I was pleased with the way they handled it against Argyle.”
What about the defense?

“Our defense forced several turnovers; we played hard. We got a lot of good out of it.”
How about the quarterback play in the scrimmage?
“Everyone looked good; we are set to go.”
How about the Paris scrimmage last Thursday?
“We did well; they are very athletic. We played a half against them. We transitioned well. We had to be fast because they were. Everyone looked sharp. It was a good test for us.”
What did you try to accomplish in the two scrimmages?
“Our tackling and blocking were the main items; we wanted to work on the basics and get them down. It’s usually not about them; it’s about us and how we can improve each week and move forward with this program.”
You’ve got the Battle of the Axe coming up this first game of the season Friday. What are your thoughts?
“You can throw out the records. They are going to play hard; we are going to play hard. Sherman is a well coached team; they are good. You can hype it up all you want; we just want to play.”
This will begin your seventh season at Denison. What are your thoughts?
“Things are going well; the team is close. We are athletic and have great attitudes. We have a great offensive line and defensive line. They all enjoy playing this great game of football. I’m excited to get this year going; I have had all great years in Denison and this is going to be another one!”
The Yellowjackets face the Sherman Bearcats Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Munson Stadium. The game is part of the FSSW cable coverage and will be included in the ‘Live Look Ins’ as the night progresses across the state under the Friday Night Lights.
