Denison Coach's Blog Off Season 2 2018

By: Coach Chad Rogers
Denison Coach’s Blog Off Season 2 2018

Coach Chad Rogers discusses the Yellowjackets off season program and what the Jackets are doing to get ready for the 2018 season, which will have at least one surprise! Go Jackets!

How is the off-season going during this month of January?

“It’s going very well; we are lifting every day we can. We are in phase 1 where we lift weights and do some skill work. We want to do things right the first time and then do them right all the time.”

When will Phase 2 start?

“We are set for our ‘draft’ on Feb. 14 where we will have our team leaders ‘draft’ a team for the remainder of the off season. They will hold their ‘teams’ accountable with everything they do in football and in school. Teams get points for doing the right thing and the team with the most points at the end will get a prize.”

And what will that prize be?

“They get PBJs………..yes, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. The players are excited about this program.”

What else will you do in phase 2?

“This is where we add more football stuff. Then, phase 3 will be even more football drills and activities; mainly during the athletic period.”

Will Denison do spring football this year?

“No, we have opted for the two scrimmages in August. We believe that this will help our team more in the long run. And this year, it is crucial given what happens early in the season.”

And what happens early in the season in 2018?

“The Sherman/Denison game is the first game of the year this time around. Yes, the ‘Battle of the Axe’ will be in August this year.”

Wow! That is different. How did that come about?

“With the realignment on Thursday, we know both Sherman and Denison will be in different districts. What we don’t know is how many teams will be in those districts, so we don’t know how many non-district slots we have. We had to put the ‘Axe’ game at the beginning to make ensure we could have it and not have two games set on the same day.”

What do you expect with the bi-annual realignment?

“I never know what to expect. Sherman has almost 1,000 more students than we do, so they will go Class 5A Division I and we will be in Class 5A Division II. I don’t even know what region we will be in. We may end up in Lubbock’s region. You just never know. We may go with the Frisco schools, the McKinney schools or somewhere totally different.”

How has the mood been in the off-season?

“The players are positive and in good moods; they know the program is solid and they like what we are doing. We have about 15 more varsity players right now than we did last off-season; so our numbers are growing.”
