The Denison Yellowjackets lost the bi-district game to Saginaw Boswell on Friday, Nov. 17 to end their season at 8-3 with a second place finish in district.

Overall, how did the team do in the playoff game?

“We played really well, but we had some breakdowns especially late and that was the difference. We’ve played well all season; and it was a great year for us.”

How did the offense do in the game?

“We had some key injuries that hurt us in the second half; we weren’t able to do the things we normally do. We lost both H-backs, which are crucial in our run game and passing game.”

What did you do when they were hurt?

“We made some adjustments, but it hurt us in the fourth quarter not having them.”

What about quarterback Austin Emery?

“In his last game for us, he had one of his best games. He ended up with more than 1,000 yards passing and a 1,000 yards rushing for the season. So, it was a great year for him.”

Emery also punted this year; how did he do in that capacity?

“Austin is one of the best punters in the country for high school; he is really good.”

How about the running and passing game?

“We did really well in both areas; we got an early lead and wanted to run the ball at the end, but we couldn’t do it.”

What about the defense?

“It was one of the best games we played until the end. We simply need to close out games. I’m proud of the way the entire team played this game and this season.”

How many seniors do you have graduating?

“We have 17 seniors this year.”

Who do you have returning?

“We have nine returning starters on defense and four on offense for next season. We have some big shoes to fill, but some of the ones coming up got some crucial playing time.”

Senior to be Nate Malsby is in a unique situation……………

“Yes, he will be a rare four year starter for us next season. He’s the first one I’ve had here at Denison. He anchors our defense at linebacker. There just aren’t many like him anymore.”

Overall, how do you think the season went?

“Of course, we were disappointed in losing the first playoff game; we had hoped to go further. The season ended too soon, but that feeds you in the offseason. We had several goals that we achieved. I’m proud of all we did. The season just went too fast this year.”

How does the future look for Denison football?

“The program has a bright future; our JV went 8-2; and our freshmen team was solid. We are coming along. I’m looking forward to it.”
