The Denison Yellowjackets go into the Battle of the Axe game against Sherman with a chance to be runner up in district this season. The Division II Class 5A playoffs loom large.
What did you think about the Denton Ryan game (Denison lost 56-16)?
“It wasn’t a very good game; we were good the first quarter, but then we slipped.”
How did you think the team played overall?
“We played well at times; they are a quality opponent. We’ve got to put points in the endzone to have a chance. We didn’t last week. Normally, we do, but we couldn’t against them.”
How did the offense do?
“We got a lot of yards; but like I said, we need points on the scoreboard. We had the ball twice inside the five and couldn’t score. We’ve got to do better.”
What about quarterback Austin Emery?
“He managed the game well; they are good at putting pressure on you. They make you do things you don’t want to do. I think he grew because of this experience. I think it will help all of us in the long run.”
What about the running game?
“It was good, but we have to finish.”
What about the defense?
“They did well; our gameplan was good. You have to pick your poison with Denton Ryan. We held them early; we forced a fumble.”
What about special teams?
“We had a field goal blocked, which is uncharacteristic of us. We did okay in the other aspects of the kicking game.”
What about the “BOTA” against Sherman? What kind of team are they?
“They are a good football team; its their second year in that system. They are big and athletic.”
How do you match up with them?
“We match up well; we think we can go with them and do somethings offensively and defensively.”
What do you think about the BOTA? This is your sixth one.
“It’s very historic; what the Axe symbolizes. It’s a great rivalry game. I like it; I like the crowd, the atmosphere and the way the kids prepare the week before. It will be a great game.”
The Yellowjackets will play either FW Boswell or Aledo in the first round of the playoffs Nov. 17; it depends on where Denison falls after this weekend’s games (2nd-4th place).
